How to build a web app without coding

In 2026 you can build a real web app, one with sign-in, saved data and payments, without writing a line of code. You describe what you want in plain words, and an AI does the technical work. What differs is which AI does the building, what you pay for it, and how much of the app you end up owning.

What a real web app needs

A page that looks right is only the start. An app people actually use needs:

  • Hosting, so it is online at its own link, around the clock.
  • Sign-in, so each person sees their own things and you decide who gets in.
  • A database and file storage, so nothing is lost when someone closes the page.
  • Email, for welcome notes, receipts and reminders.
  • Payments, if you sell anything.
  • Often a server that works on its own: scheduled jobs, heavy processing, talking to other services.

Whatever route you choose, check that it gives you all of these, not just the pages.

Three ways to do it

1. Classic no-code tools

Website and app builders where you drag blocks onto a page. Good for simple sites and forms. You learn the tool’s way of doing things, and more complex apps soon run into its limits.

2. AI app builders

Tools such as Lovable, Base44, Bolt and Replit have their own AI that builds the app from your description. They are quick to start, but you pay for building through the builder’s credits or plans, on top of any AI you already pay for, and changes later cost more credits.

3. The AI you already use, plus Pilely

If you already pay for ChatGPT or Claude, that AI can be the builder. Pilely gives it everything above, ready to switch on: hosting, sign-in, a database, file storage, email, Stripe payments and a server. You describe the app to your AI, it builds it on your computer, and Pilely puts it online. Building runs on the AI plan you already have; running the app is paid for only by what it uses.

Build your first app in five steps

  1. Open an AI that can work on your computer: Codex in ChatGPT, or the Claude desktop app.
  2. Send it the message at the end of this page.
  3. Say yes when it explains the setup, and sign in with the code sent to your email.
  4. Describe your app: who it is for and what it should do.
  5. Open your app at its own link, and keep asking for changes in the same chat.

Ideas to start with

  • An app only you need: a tracker for your plants, your training, your reading.
  • One for your people: a chore chart for the family, a trip planner for friends, a sign-up page for your club.
  • A small business: a booking page with payments, a members’ area, a paid newsletter with your own data.

Common questions

Is an app built this way a real app? Yes. It has real sign-in, a real database and real payments, and it can grow from one user to many without being rebuilt.

Do I own it? With Pilely, the source code is on your computer, your data can be read out through your app’s own API, and payments go to your own Stripe account.

What does it cost? Building uses the AI plan you already have. Running the app is paid for with prepaid Pilely credits, only for what it uses, and new accounts get up to $5 of free credit to start.
